Contact Staff 101 – Foundations of Flow
An introductory contact staff class covering wraps, rolls, and helixes to help you build smooth control and link foundational techniques into clean beginner flow combinations.
Contact Staff 101 – Foundations of Flow is an introductory class designed to build a strong base in contact staff manipulation. Whether you're brand new to staff or transitioning from spinning into contact-based movement, this workshop breaks down essential techniques in a clear and accessible way.
We begin with grip awareness, body positioning, and understanding balance points so you can feel stable and confident with your prop. From there, we explore core contact staff fundamentals including hand wraps, arm rolls, chest rolls, shoulder rolls, and helixes. Each movement is broken down step by step with attention to timing, alignment, and momentum control.
Students will learn how to guide the staff using relaxed control rather than tension — allowing the prop to travel smoothly across the body. Focused drills will help build consistency while addressing common beginner challenges like gripping too tightly or “chasing” the staff.
As the class progresses, we’ll begin linking techniques together, combining wraps, rolls, and helixes into short, fluid sequences. By the end of the workshop, participants will leave with foundational combinations they can continue practicing and expanding in their personal flow journey.
This class emphasizes patience, body awareness, and clean technique. Modifications and progressions will be offered to support a range of experience levels. Props will be available for those who need them.
Come ready to learn, laugh, drop your staff a few times, and build a solid foundation for your contact staff practice.
